Copenhagen

Copenhagen is somewhere we’ve always wanted to visit! We had heard lots of positive things about the city when it comes to things to see and do, as well as the gluten free food scene!

We had our first taste of the Nordic countries in Finland last year, had an absolutely amazing time, and have been wanting to visit more Nordic destinations ever since! It’s fair to say we had high expectations for Copenhagen!

As with any new place, I always get nervous as a coeliac about finding safe, gluten free food, however, through doing some research, we found some incredible gluten free restaurants in Copenhagen that are fully coeliac safe and they really added to our experience there!

These are our recommendations for gluten free food in Copenhagen!

Restaurants

Restaurant Tight
We ate at loads of incredible places during our time in Copenhagen but Restaurant Tight was our favourite! They serve a modern twist on traditional Scandinavian food with really good quality ingredients. We ate here twice and loved everything we tried! Most of the menu is available gluten free and I felt very safe after talking to the waiters.

Breto Crêperie
One of our top recommendations for gluten free in Copenhagen is Breto Crêperie. We’re always nervous about trying new places when travelling with coeliac but this gem in the centre of Copenhagen was a real find! They have a huge selection of gluten free sweet and savoury galettes and after speaking to the staff, I could tell they took real care to make sure the gluten free galettes were prepared safe for coeliacs. We visited here twice; once for brunch and once for dinner and loved it both times!

Il Grappolo Blu
We had a really lovely meal at Il Grappolo Blu. It’s an authentic, high-end Italian restaurant that offers plenty of gluten free options, including pasta. We both ordered the ragu and thought it was particularly good! They also offer gluten free tiramisu which felt like a real treat! This is definitely on the more expensive side so we’d recommend it for a special occasion!

Khmer Cuisine
Khmer Cuisine is an authentic Cambodian restaurant in the centre of Copenhagen. Almost all of the menu is naturally gluten free so it feels very safe in terms of cross contact. The food was lovely and fresh which was perfect after a long travel day!

Cafes

H.U.G Bageri
H.U.G Bageri was our favourite gluten free bakery in Copenhagen! When travelling with coeliac, finding a good gluten free bakery can be one of the highlights of the trip and this was no exception! The pain au chocolat was one of the best pastries I’ve had since my coeliac diagnosis and it’s fair to say I bought a not-insignificant number of products to take with me for later in the day!

Palæo
Palæo is 100% gluten-free, and mostly lactose-free and the food is also made with no added sugar. I had the chicken meatball egg wrap and Martin had the egg wrap with salmon. The food tasted absolutely incredible and it was nice to have a genuinely healthy meal (we had to balance the previous day’s pastries somehow!). This was a real gem that we’d highly recommend! There are two locations in central Copenhagen; one in Torvehallerne Market and the other at the rooftop of Illum department store (which has a fantastic view!).

Glean
Also located at Torvehallerne Market, Glean serves fully gluten free and vegan Flødebolle; the traditional Danish treat consisting of a meringue-like foam on a cookie base, covered in a shell of chocolate. They served a whole range of flavours; we picked four different ones to try and loved every single one! These were delicious and it was so nice not to miss out on trying a local delicacy!

Tivoli Gardens
We didn’t spend much time searching for gluten free options at Tivoli Gardens, but we did find out that the popcorn from the carts is naturally gluten free! We asked the people at the stand who showed us the allergen chart and also listed the very few ingredients they used (none of which contained gluten). It felt safe enough, so I ordered a small portion and I didn’t have any reaction from it! We’d definitely recommend speaking to them at the time and making your own judgement.
